11 Things To Think About Before Choosing Your Domain Name
With such massive growth in the number of websites and everyone wanting to be online, it is no surprise that many of the great domains have are already registered. Before you decide to go out and purchase one either by hand registering or the aftermarket make sure you consider the following
If it’s not available by hand registration (through Godaddy or another registrar), be it by the current owner or already taken and by someone using it for their website. If it is an existing website and is clearly being used, move on if you go to the domain directly, and there is no website you may find that it is currently for sale by owner or be able to track them down and find out if you can buy it.
2. COPYRIGHT AND TRADEMARKS
Ensure that you do not breach the copyright or infringe trademarks with your choice of domain. You can try Trademark247.com this site offers a free trademark search for companies that may already have your idea trademarked. If this is the case, move on and explore other options.
3. TLD EXTENSIONS
We have all heard that “.com is king” well that is true, and if you can grab it, I most certainly would, if not the .net would be your next best bet. You can also consider one of the many other TLD’s (Top Level Domain) extensions widely available these days there are so many more options to be creative with your online branding.
4. BE GREEDY!
Be proud of your website and your brand, protect it! You can grab several extensions if you want too and point them all to your site. There are several reasons you may wish to do this; most importantly would be brand protection, but you may also consider using certain ones for marketing or other ventures.
5. DONT FORGET
Keep it easy to remember and try to avoid numbers and dashes. Think of the “radio test” you will want something catchy but also able to recognize when heard not only seen.
We all know the terms like eBay, but not all of us have the deep pockets to advertise and pound the brand into brains at this level. If you’re a Baker, go for something like BakeBarn.com that people will be able to relate to without massive marketing dollars behind it.
7. WHAT IS IT?
Similar to the above example, don’t shy away from descriptiveness if I said the term FairOaksHomes.com. I would guess that the majority of people would predict what the site is about. However, something like Etsy is much more difficult to guess, and without the BIG brand dollars, it’s just not likely you will gain any direct traffic if someone were only to hear or see it somewhere.
8. ON AND OFFLINE MARKETING
You will want to use your domain everywhere, so picture it on business cards, magazines, signs, etc. try using capital letters, e.g. which is easier to read – bigrockwebdesign.com or BigRockWebDesign.com?
Domain names are not case sensitive, so your clients will find your site whichever version they use. But if you had Big-Rock-Webdesign.com, most people will not remember the hyphens, and it does not look as professional, so I would strongly discourage using them.
9. BUY YOUR DOMAIN FOR AS LONG AS YOU CAN
You usually have the option to register a domain up to 10 Years; if this is a company or brand, you plan on keeping I would take advantage of this. It will not only secure your brand, but you will also be locked in on the pricing should domain registrars raise them in the future.
10. OWN YOUR DOMAIN NAME
Don’t let your web designer or third party register your domain names, ensure you register them in your name. You can retain control and point your name servers to their hosting to get your website live. There may be some instances where they need to login to the domain registrar to make some changes to the DNS records or something similar but register to your name your email and only give access as needed.
11. PRIVATE REGISTRATION
Consider private registration if you would like to keep your information private. Choosing private registration will protect your personal information when looked up in the whois database. This can reduce unwanted solicitation and protect your identity.
